I am many things to many people. I am Dad to 4. I am Pop to 8. I am the “significant other” to 1. I am “the ex” to 2. And I am the master to one crazy German Shepherd.
I have lived in a very large city and on a farm outside a small rural town. Yes, I’m a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. These days, I live in a little beach town on a small island in Northeast Florida, and I am very happy to be here. It’s a place that I truly feel at home and may be the place where I was always meant to be. For a beach bum like me, nothing beats living less than 5 minutes from the beach.
If I don’t have a camera with me, the universe seems somehow out of kilter. I’ve been doing this since I was quite young. And people…not only my mom…think I’m pretty darn good at it. I'm really good at candid shots of people. An art school professor once told me that I have a special way of capturing people. Who am I to argue with her? Actually, I think she was right.
While I've always loved photography, it's only fairly recently that I decided that I wanted to try to make it my full-time gig, and I am seriously studying everything I can to become better at it. I have fallen in love with lighting and stobist type shooting.
Concert & band photography is my passion. The combination of photography and live music is just so natural for me as they are both such a big part of my life. I went to my first concert when I was 12, over 40 years ago; it was The Grateful Dead at the Spectrum in Philly and they played for 5 hours. I’ll never forget it. I spent most of my teen years and beyond going to as many concerts as I could, sometimes 3 or 4 in a week. I’ve seen most every rock artist of the 70’s, a lot of them several times. These days, I get out to probably one live performance a week, sometimes quite a few more. I Shoot Musicians and I make people look like Rock Stars. I love to capture the moment when a performer shows their spirit and personality. It’s like magic. Capturing that energy and emotion is what it’s all about for me. Someone told me that I do it so well because I feel the music so much more than most people. Some of my photos have been published in Guitar World, Guitar Player, Guitar Edge, Musicians Friend, The Buzz, Axis Magazine, and other national and local publications as well as many sites on the web. While I take most of my photos in the Northeast Florida area, I have traveled throughout the Southeast to cover musical events. Now, if I could just figure out a way to make real money at it!

I have always been a creative person. I was always interested in art. I used to do alot of scrapbooking, (alot) and had many friends who admired the pictures in my albums. One of those friends hired me to do her family pictures, all I had then was my little kodak digital camera and my brain, and it pretty much snowballed from there. This wasn't something I would have ever thought of doing as a career let alone having my own successful business. So along the way, I have had to learn (alot of times it was by doing things the wrong way) how to get the effects I wanted. Gradually got better equipment and try to learn things along the way. I also make collages with all of my shoots to capture some of the feeling. turning a few pictures into a work of art. The best part of being a photographer is all the friends you make along the way. When I gain a client, they always come back for more, and that trusting relationship goes along way. Helps me to build the self confidence I need in making this successful business.

"I love weddings when the couple is really in love and aren't afraid to be affectionate and show it! Or when my bride is so creative and comes up with the coolest ideas!!! I am a detailed person who loves organization, so I enjoy the planning side of weddings...helping my brides with timelines, details, and ideas.
My goal for 2010 is to really watch and capture that moment in between the moment- like just right before or after a sweet kiss, or the emotion of a dad and daughter dancing...I want that emotion to show thru my images and tell the story.
I love children photography when they cooperate. Ha! I love to shoot kiddos when they laugh and play and babies when they sleep. I love to capture families that are close and lovey dovey, and like being silly! Maternity is my most challenging, I enjoy it but the posing and ideas don't come as easy for me. I like to do it but will probably be better at it once I've experienced being pregnant myself!
Probably my most favorite though would be engagement pix. I love to see the newness of the relationship and love with engagement pix. I love when couples are giggly and sweet with each other, and when they love to do fun pix!"

- Status: Part Time. I also work for SmugMug as their resident designer.
- Types of Photography: I shoot mainly dance, family and portraiture, with a few weddings mixed in to keep it interesting.

Short Bio - I started in photography as a kid when my grandparents gave me an Argus 126 camera for christmas one year. I burned thru a lot of film before the economics of it all outstripped my modest 8 year-old finances. Much later on I picked up a camera when digital was just starting to catch on and before long I was back learning traditional photography and working in my own darkroom. I worked as a designer at Adobe and gravitated towards the photo side of their offerings, working on Photoshop, Camera Raw and finally Lightroom - a product which I'm very proud of and use to this day.
I spent the better part of 5 years doing mainly fine art street photography - prowling the streets with my Leica and learning how to edit my work. I kinda stumbled into dance photography when I suggested a small project with a local studio where my daughter was dancing. One thing lead to another and now I find myself shooting several big dance events a year in the Seattle area and am the studio photographer for Emerald Ballet Theatre in Bellevue, Wa. Dancers moving fast in dark environments have really pushed me technically, and I've been really happy with the improvements in hardware over the past 5 years.
My style has morphed over the past decade, and what was once a body of very traditional, very rigid black & white work has morphed into a much more varied presentation using colors, toning and more than a few vignettes. Lightroom has had a huge impact on that broadening focus beyond my comfort zone. I shoot a lot more these days, and as my volume has increased, I've actually handed off the proofing, sales and printing to SmugMug and its pro lab which has saved me a huge amount of time.
I don't do much active marketing per se, but I pick up a manageable volume of family, senior and portraiture work thru the dance studios clientele - its a nice symbiosis.
Each year brings a new bunch of stuff to learn, and I enjoy the challenges photography brings. Furthermore, I find a lot of inspiration with both the contemporary and historical work out there. I'm a huge fan of using the social media outlets, especially twitter and facebook to publicize my work and I'm amazed at the connections I've made thru that venue. I try to limit my follows, but those I do constantly impress.
My job designing photographer tools for the last decade has allowed me to travel, attend conferences (you'll always find me at WPPI & PPE) and meet with some great artists and interesting people.
Finally, I do a weekly roundup of the important happenings in the Lightroom world, entitled "Lightroom Tuesday" that is chalk full of tutorials, tips and tricks for making the most of today's outstanding workflow software. Follow me on Twitter for the weekly reminders.
Its a great time to be a photographer.

Short Bio - My name is Dawn McCarthy and I am a professional wedding photographer. I positively LOVE what I do! There is not a happier day in a woman’s life than her wedding day… well, okay... maybe those women who have won the lottery feel differently, but I am basing this statement on the average woman. I thrive on witnessing the love and blissful emotion between two people who are about to commit their lives to one another. I have a personal goal in every wedding that I shoot to provide my Brides with a tangible, everlasting reflection of the dream day that escaped them far too fast! I pay strict attention to detail, but evoke a light-hearted spirit that has been said to “put you at ease on the most important day of your life.” I love everything about weddings and I am always anxious to meet my next Bride…might you be her?
In addition to my insatiable passion for photography, I am a wife and a mom. I have been married for ten years (on the 17th of this month) to my college sweetheart and I am raising two boys who are undeniably the loves of my life! I have a thick southern accent that tends to make people smile and say “where do you come from?” But don't let the accent fool you! I am quite the savvy business woman. And I am a force to be reckoned with in my kitchen! An invitation to supper at my house is usually a coveted prize. You wanna come? I'll feed ya! If I had to pick a few adjectives to describe myself, I suppose they would be: determined, fierce, creative, honest and completely genuine. I’m just me. It’s been so nice to meet ‘cha.

Short Bio: I got my first camera in 7th grade, circa 1977, not really mine, just a vacation lend from my Dad. He set up a darkroom in our only bathroom and took so many pictures of me that they fill 11 albums.
I loved yearbook staff so much in high school that I chose to study and graduate from BYU with a BFA in photography and minor in communications. My first job was at the Provo Daily Herald with the amazing Jason Olson and Trent Nelson. I worked part-time after our first child, then freelanced, then had three children, then interned with the Deseret News during the 2002 Olympics.
My rekindling of my wedding photography business started when I traded in my Nikon f4 for a Nikon D70 in 2004. The digital bug bit me and here I am. I shoot families, weddings and some public relations work. I would love to shoot 50 weddings a year, but for now. I shoot less than 10, with about that many other clients as well.
My kids have busy social lives filled with friends, creek walking and music and sports. My husband is a web designer who loves his job, family and church.

Word from the Photographer: I became interested in photography when my first son, Caleb, was born. As a proud new parent I took pictures of him with a VGA camera (640 x 480, not even 1 megapixel) that only had enough memory to take 12 pictures, and cost about $500. The pictures looked terrible, but I was able to email them to family and was quickly bitten by the photo bug. Almost ten years and seven cameras have passed since I snapped the first picture of Caleb. I have learned so much and gained a creative outlet that still surprises many of my friends and family members.

For as long as I can remember I have been interested in photography but never had the time or the resources to really get into it. It wasn’t until I had an unfortunate injury at work that I took time to seriously look at pursuing my passion for the art. I knew loved it before but wow!
I love life and everything it as to offer. The camera has given me a way to share my vision of the world and the great people in it.
My two cents - Jarvie
I think it should be noted he played football for my University - Go BYU

I'm pretty sure he's in this picture of his family, so I wonder if he did indeed take it

Word from another photographer.
I know Heidi because she interned with me (Scott Jarvie)
I've seen her grow leaps and bounds with her photography in the last few months.
Her blog posts are insightful and talk alot about the interactions with the families and other subjects she works with.
I think she excels at setting up shoots with little newborns, something I've never even attempted.
She's recently learning the ropes in Wedding Photography and assisting many photographers in Utah.
